October, 2007
Dear Neighbors in Christ,
Welcome to the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy. This year, 2007, we are celebrating 205 years of service to Jesus Christ in this city. It is our privilege to do God’s work.
Perth Amboy is a vibrant city of 50,000 people located on the northern bank of the Raritan River where it opens into Raritan Bay. Located just across the Outerbridge Crossing from Staten Island, the City by the Bay has a long history dating back to Colonial days. Just across the street from our church is the longest continually used town hall building in the country. Just a few blocks away is Proprietary House, the last remaining original Royal Governor’s Mansion in existence in the United States. The last Royal Governor was William Franklin, son of one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin.
The history of this city has been the history of the immigrant experience in America. Waves of immigrants have moved in and out of this city in the last two hundred years. Irish, Hungarian, Slovakian, and Danish are just some of the historic immigrant communities fostered here. Now, Peruvian, Dominican, Mexican, and other Latin American and Caribbean immigrant communities have settled here.
In the midst of all this is our church. We have ministered in this immigrant, urban center joyfully through all our years. Presently, our worship service is Sunday morning at 10:30 am throughout the program year, at 9:00 am from the first Sunday in July through Labor Day weekend. You are invited to come and worship the Lord with us every Sunday.
We are part of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest Presbyterian denomination in the country. Connected to fifty churches in our Presbytery extending over three counties in Central New Jersey, we are part of a community of over eleven thousand churches across the nation.
If you are looking for a place to worship Jesus Christ, we are pleased to open our doors to you. May God bless you today. I am your servant,
In Jesus Christ,
Rev. Peter Hofstra
